Around 200 makers pitch us every season, and five make the crate. That ratio isn't us being precious — it's what happens when every item has to pass the same four-part test before it ships to a single member, and most good products fail at least one part.
The first test is the workshop visit. Every maker in a Wanderfolk box is an independent shop — a roaster, a stitcher, a small foundry — and someone from our team has stood in the room where the thing gets made. Photos lie, wholesale catalogs lie harder, and a workshop visit is how you learn whether the 'small batch' claim means forty units or forty thousand.
The second test is the beater test. We carry a candidate item for six weeks before it's eligible: the mug rides in a pannier, the notebook lives in a rain jacket pocket, the soap gets dunked in an actual creek. If it looks worse in an interesting way, it passes. If it looks worse in a broken way, it doesn't — no exceptions for items we personally love.
The third test is the price-honesty check. Every crate lists the maker-direct price of each item on the card in the box, and the month's total has to comfortably beat the plan price. If we can only hit that math by squeezing the maker's margin, the item waits for a season where we can pay them properly. Makers who get squeezed once don't pitch you their best work twice.
The last test is the simplest: would a member miss it if it were gone? Filler is the death of subscription boxes — the fourth item nobody asked for, added to pad an unboxing photo. Our rule is that a three-item crate of things you'll still use next year beats a seven-item crate of things you won't remember by fall. When in doubt, the item stays out, and the box gets lighter and better.
